Is It Safe to Feed Your Baby a Vegetarian Diet?

May 1, 2019

More and more people today are choosing to eat vegetarian. And there many good reasons why. For some people, it’s an ethical choice, while others want to protect the environment.

If you are committed to a vegetarian lifestyle, then you probably want your children to eat vegetarian, too. But is it safe?

Your baby and vegetarianism

It is absolutely possible to raise healthy kids on a vegetarian diet. If you have been vegetarian for a long time, then you should be an expert in getting all the right nutrients, without meat!

However, bear in mind that children have different nutritional needs from adults. If you are a breast-feeding mother, you’ll have to make sure that your diet includes enough nutrients for the two of you. And once your child is old enough to be weaned, you’ll need to supervise their nutrition carefully.

Healthy vegetarian options for babies

The best way to eat healthy is to eat a big variety of different foods. Include lots of fruit, vegetables,  healthy grains and beans in your diet to get a wide range of vitamins and nutrients.

Remember that kids need lots of energy, but they tend to eat very small portions. So make sure that every meal and snack contains some energy-releasing, healthy carbs. Look for root vegetables full of slow-release carbs, such as potatoes, oatmeal, beans, fresh fruit, and sweet potatoes.

With a vegetarian diet, the biggest risk is a lack of protein and iron. Support your child’s growth with plenty of beans, dairy products such as milk and yogurt, and green leafy vegetables.

To support your child’s vitamin intake, you might want to use vitamin supplements. Although fibre is important in a healthy diet, don’t eat too much, or it can reduce your body’s ability to absorb vitamins.

Last of all, remember not to be too strict. Of course, your lifestyle choices and values are very important. But when your child is going through key developmental stages, your priority should be to give them the nutrition they need. That’s why First Spoons offers balanced, delicious meals with a wide range of organic ingredients.
