So, What’s in Season This Season… and What’s That Mean for Me?

Can you feel it? Spring is in the air, the weather is turning (for those of you in areas with four seasons, of course) and everyone seems just a little bit happier – including your kids!

*hopefully*

But still, the question remains: What to feed those little suckers with the warming weather? Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered.

 Let’s get fruity

First thing you’ll probably start to notice as the weather turns is the sudden increase in fruit and vegetable dishes. We’re talking new, vibrant meals and snacks that use blueberries, cucumbers, celery, watermelon, honeydew, etc. as either a base or just an addition to spice up an old favorite.

This is great for a couple of reasons: 1) the dishes taste great, and 2) because they’re so visually appealing, chances are your kids will go “I want, I want, I want!” in no time.

Gotta love marketing, huh?

What can I do with the newly in-season foods?

Short answer: lots!

Looking to spice up that “boring” old side-o-veggies? Try a green bean and almond salad. Or, for a more festive idea, how about some breakfast tacos featuring the oh, so rare – yet never better – radish salsa.

Can’t go wrong with a classic

Let’s not for the ever-so-beloved smoothie. Sucking down one of those bad boys during the winter is fine and all – if you’re okay with being chilly inside AND out – but a smoothie when the sun’s shining on your face? Oh boy.

Can we all agree – enough said?

Another important thing to note with the classic smoothie is that you can pretty much make whatever kind you want fairly easily. Feeling in more of a vegetable mood? How about a broccoli smoothie? How about tossing in some garlic, celery and ginger?

Bottom line: Get creative! C’mon… it’s (almost) summer! Plus, if you’ve got a blender and some fruits and/or vegetables, you’re already half way there!

Let’s talk health

As many choices as you might have in terms of what’s now in season – or what’s coming into season – it’s all the more important to make sure you’re staying healthy and hydrated.

Seriously, have you ever felt dehydrated in the sweltering heat? Exactly…

Anyway, Health.com has some pretty great ideas for making sure this coming season isn’t a big burden on you and your kids.

Our fave: cucumber water. Hands down. Folks, have you EVEN TRIED cucumber water? It’s divine.

And no, that’s not an over exaggeration.
